The 'Belmont Chiefs got off to a horrible start under owner/manager Jim Poole, losing their first 17 games and 22 of their first 24. Poole fired himself and hired Whitey Ries on May 27. The team signed a working agreement with the San Francisco Giants in early July and Ries resigned on July 17.
