Barry Jones was signed as a 3rd round pick in the 1984 amateur draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and scout Jim Maxwell.
Jones was an above-average relief pitcher over most of his 8-year career. He gave up less hits than innings pitched in his career, 415 hits in 433 innings. Jones had a career ERA of 3.66, which is an ERA+ of 102. He was Bobby Thigpen's main right-handed set-up man when Thigpen saved 57 games in 1990. Jones had the most saves on the 1991 Montreal Expos with 13. He had one career hit in 16 at bats; it was on August 22, 1986 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates against Ed Olwine of the Atlanta Braves. He also got a save in that game, pitching the last 3 and 2/3 innings giving up no hits, no runs 2 walks and striking out 2. The Pirates won the game, 16-5.
