Catcher Barney Gilligan played eleven seasons in the major leagues, breaking in during the last year of the National Association with the 1875 Brooklyn Atlantics. Another youngster who also played catcher briefly in 1875 with Brooklyn was Doc Bushong, who also went on to a long career in the majors.
Gilligan was one of the players victimized when Lee Richmond threw his perfect game in 1880.
