Biographical Information
Barney Schultz pitched professionally for 23 years, from 1944 to 1966. He was a knuckleball pitcher who did not establish himself as a major leaguer until well past the age of thirty. He was a premier relief pitcher in his day although he is now remembered for a knuckleball that did not knuckle - a walk-off home run he served up to Mickey Mantle to end game three of the 1964 World Series. It was a monster shot that went into the upper deck of Yankee Stadium.
After his playing career ended, Schultz was a St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitching instructor from 1967 to 1970 and the Cardinals pitching coach from 1971 to 1975. He was a member of the Chicago Cubs staff in 1977.
