The Austrian Baseball League is younger than most of the baseball leagues in western Europe. Baseball was a very minor sport in Austria as of 1987 with only 6 teams nationwide at any level, but there were over 50 clubs by 1993. Austrian Baseball League champions have qualified for the European Cup a couple times. Some of the top Austrian players have made it to the German Bundesliga. In 2009, former major leaguer Greg McCarthy became the first ex-MLB'er to sign in the ABL.
