Shortstop Augie Schmidt played college baseball at the University of New Orleans and won the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur player in 1982. That same year, he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with the second overall pick in the amateur draft. He played three seasons in the minors for the Blue Jays before being traded to the San Francisco Giants along with Jim Gott for pitcher Gary Lavelle. Sadly, his baseball career peaked out at the AAA level. He retired in 1986 and in 1988 became the head baseball coach at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, where he still remains.
