The Atlantic Coast Conference was formed May 8, 1953 with seven charter members -- Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The seven institutions withdrew from the Southern Conference.

Virginia was admitted December 4, 1953. South Carolina withdrew June 30, 1971. Georgia Tech was admitted April 3, 1978, Florida State in July 1, 1991. Miami and Virginia Tech were added in July 1, 2004, and Boston College in July 1, 2005.
