From BR Bullpen
The Atlantic Coast Conference was formed May 8, 1953 with seven charter members -- Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The seven institutions withdrew from the Southern Conference.
Virginia was admitted December, 1953. South Carolina withdrew June, 1971. Georgia Tech was admitted April, 1978, Florida State in July 1991. Miami and Virginia Tech were added in July 2004, and Boston College in July 2005.
On September 18, 2011 it was announced that the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University had been admitted to the conference from the Big East Conference [1]. It was also reported that the University of Connecticut showed strong interest in making the same switch [2]. Rutgers University was also a rumored candidate to bring the conference up to 16 teams.
