[edit] Biographical Information

Art Mahan had only one year in the majors, but he appeared in 146 games with 524 at-bats as the regular first baseman, and also pitched one inning without giving up a run. In his season with the 1940 Philadelphia Phillies, he hit .244, which was above the team average of .238. He fit in well in terms of age; he was 27 years old at the time, on a team where the average age was 27.

An interesting comparison to Art Mahan is Johnny Sturm, who also played just one year in the majors, and was a regular in that year. Mahan's year was in 1940, one year earlier than Sturm's year. The similarity scores method shows Sturm as the most similar near-contemporary player to Mahan.

Mahan returned to Villanova University as head coach from 1950 to 1972 and also served as the school's athletic director for over a decade. He died in 2010 at age 97.
