Art Gardner played three years in the majors, mostly for the Houston Astros.

Gardner was a second-round pick in 1971 by the Astros, and hit .303 that year for Covington. Moving his way up the organization, he was at Iowa in 1975, where he was a teammate of Mike Easler, who was a couple years older.

Art made his major league debut in September, getting into 13 games with the 1975 Astros. In 1976 he played the year at Memphis but the next season he was up the entire year with the 1977 Astros. Of his 66 appearances, 26 were in the field.

Gardner was traded in the off-season to the San Francisco Giants, and spent most of 1978 with Phoenix, hitting 16 triples and stealing 37 bases. He came up for seven games with the Giants.

In 1979-80 he was with Denver. In 1980 he hit .317 with 30 doubles, 10 triples and 14 home runs. Tim Raines, Tim Wallach and Randy Bass were teammates.

In 1981-82 he was playing in Japan.

In 1984-86 he coached at Jackson State University. He came back to play in 1986 for one last season in the minors, with Tulsa. Afterwards he coached in the Texas Rangers minor league organization and then became a scout for Major League Baseball.
