West Virginia native Arnold Carter played eight seasons in professional baseball from 1940 to 1947. The left-hander spent two full seasons in the Major Leagues with the Cincinnati Reds, winning 11 and losing 7 in 1944 and going 2-4 in 1945. This gave him Big League career numbers of 13 wins and 11 losses with a 2.72 ERA while pitching 195 1/3 innings in 46 games.
Carter spent six seasons in the minor leagues during his pro baseball career, with three double-digit win seasons. In 1941, Arnold was 13-8 in 29 games in a split-season affair with the Logan Indians of the class D Mountain State League and the Columbia Reds of the class B South Atlantic League.
Arnold followed this up with a 16-10 record in 35 games in the 1942 year, with three different clubs - the Muskogee Reds, Ogden Reds and Columbia Reds. In 1943, Arnold spent the season with the Syracuse Chiefs of the AA (then the highest tier of the minors) International League, building a 14-12 record with a 2.35 ERA in 31 games. This opened his door to the Major League Crosley Field team.
Carter finished his professional baseball career in 1947 with a minor league record of 58-48, pitching 924 innings in 149 games. After baseball, he became a painter for the Ford Motor Company until his retirement. Arnold Lee Carter died on April 12, 1989 at his home in Louisville, KY at 71 years of age.
