Arizona League

From BR Bullpen

Jump to: navigation, search

The complex-based Arizona League was formed in 1988 as a western alternative to the Gulf Coast League. A rookie circuit, it held just four teams in its first season. The league has historically been based in the Phoenix suburban area, but from 1998-2000 there were four teams in Tucson, AZ. Due to the heavy expense of scouting and player development, major league officials were considering shutting down one or both of the complex leagues after the 2005 season.

  • Opening Date: June 22.
  • Closing Date: August 30.
  • First Half Closing Date: July 26.
  • Second Half Beginning Date: July 27.
  • Regular Season: 56 games.
  • Playoff Format: First half winner meets second half winner (one game).
  • All-Star Game: None.
  • Roster Limit: 35 active.
  • Player Eligibility Rule: No more than two years of prior Minor League service, provided that players under the age of 20 may have two years of prior Minor League service.
