Biographical Information[edit]

Andrés Ávila has pitched as high as AAA.

Ávila was signed by Oakland Athletics scout Craig Weissman in April 2010. He split that year between the AZL Athletics (0-2, 2 Sv, 5.65 in 12 G) and the Tigres de Quintana Roo (1-1, 4.43 in 16 G). In the winter, he had a save and a 5.40 ERA in 12 games for the Cañeros de Los Mochis. He was 3-5 with a 5.20 ERA for the 2011 AZL Athletics, leading in strikeouts (71, 10 ahead of Abel De Los Santos), tying Julio Morales and Blake Perry for third in the Arizona League in losses and allowing the most hits (83, four ahead of Uber Paz). For Los Mochis in the winter, he was 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in 21 outings.

For the 2012 Vermont Lake Monsters, he posted a 3-4, 3.82 record. He was 10th in the New York-Penn League with 60 whiffs. For the 2012-2013 Cañeros, he was 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA. He split the summer of 2013 between the Beloit Snappers (7-4, 2 Sv, 5.01 in 23 G) and Stockton Ports (0-3, 9.30 in 5 G). He was effective that winter for Los Mochis (3-1, 3 Sv, 1.50 in 31 G).

In 2014, he pitched again for Beloit (2-3, 8 Sv, 2.67 in 24 G) and Stockton (3-1, 3.00 in 17 G). He tied Sam Bragg for 10th in the A's chain in games pitched. For the Cañeros, he was 2-2 with a team-high 8 saves and a 2.76 ERA. In 2015, he saw action with Stockton (2-0, 3 Sv, 0 ER in 13 2/3 IP) and the Midland Rockhounds (5-1, 4.10 in 32 G). He was again Los Mochis's closer and was 0-2 with 23 saves and a 3.38 ERA. He led the LMP in saves, one ahead of Steven Hensley. He tied Mark Zappelli's 25-year-old league record for saves in a season.

He pitched one game for the Mexican national team that cruised through the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers to win a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. In game 2, against Nicaragua, he relieved Giovanny Gallegos with a 9-0 lead in the 6th. He allowed a single to Darrel Campbell then retired Willie Vasquez, Jairo Beras and Ofilio Castro. In the 7th, he was relieved by Carlos Fisher. With Midland for all of 2016, he was 6-3 with a save and a 3.59 ERA, striking out 77 and walking 21 in 72 2/3 IP. He was 9th in the Texas League with 40 games pitched. He was 1-1 with ten saves and a 2.39 ERA for Los Mochis in 2016-2017, tying teammate Jon Sintes for 4th in the LMP in saves.
