[edit] Biographical Information
Alonzo Breitenstein pitched one game for the 1883 Philadelphia Quakers, a team which went 17-81 on the season.
He is one of two major league players (through 2009) with the last name Breitenstein. He is not listed as related to Ted Breitenstein, another 19th Century player - Alonzo was born and died in Utica, NY while Ted was born and died in St. Louis, MO. Alonzo also played professional ball for Utica in 1885.
He is one of two major league players (through 2009) with the first name Alonzo. The other is Alonzo Powell. Some others were given the name Alonzo at birth but are not remembered with that first name - such as, for example, Alonzo "Candy" Harris.
One observer pointed out that Abe Wolstenholme and Alonzo Breitenstein were among the longest names for a battery. The two, while both on the 1883 Quakers, did not appear in the same game.
