Alex Serrano broke into the major leagues in 2008.
Serrano was signed initially by the Colorado Rockies. He debuted professionally with the 1998 VSL Rockies and went 6-1 with six saves and a 2.41 ERA. In 1999, he was 3-2 with five saves and a 1.20 ERA for the AZL Rockies; opponents hit .194. In 2000, he pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings for the AZL Rockies.
The Venezuelan right-hander split 2001 between the Casper Rockies (a dazzling line of 2-0, 6 Sv, 0 R in 18 IP, 23 K, 1 BB, 10 H) and Asheville Tourists (0.66 ERA in 14 games). In 2002, he was 5-5 with 8 saves and a 4.96 ERA for Asheville, allowing a .325 average. Serrano was 4-5 with four saves and a 3.09 ERA for the 2003 Visalia Oaks, with 71 strikeouts to 13 walks in 75 2/3 innings pitched.
In 2004, Serrano was 3-4 with a 3.38 ERA for the Tulsa Drillers. He split 2005 between Tulsa (1-0, 4 Sv, 0.63) and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (4-3, 5.85) before being released. Signed by the Los Angeles Angels, he was 1-3 with 11 saves and a 1.73 ERA for the Arkansas Travelers. He was 4th in the Texas League with 15 saves between his two stops.
Serrano missed 2006 due to injury. In 2007, he was 3-5 with 4 saves and a 5.04 ERA for the Salt Lake Bees. Opponents hit .315 but Serrano walked only 10 batters in 69 2/3 innings.
Serrano came up to the Angels early in 2008 for his major league debut, replacing Reggie Willits on the roster. He made his big league debut in the 9th inning against Kansas City with a 3-2 deficit, replacing fellow rookie Darren O'Day. He got a grounder from Joey Gathright to Chone Figgins for out number one. He struck out Mark Grudzielanek. Mark Teahen doubled but Billy Butler grounded out to end the inning.
