Ojea was drafted in the 24th round of the 1985 Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played middle infield in their organization until 1988, topping out at the single-A level. He returned to organized baseball in 1995, playing for the Philadelphia Phillies during the player's strike. Ojea was cut before the end of spring training, but did play later that year for the Newburgh Night Hawks of the independent Northeast League.
