[edit] Biographical Information
Alex Fernández threw two one-hitters in his career. The first was on May 4, 1992 as a member of the Chicago White Sox against the Milwaukee Brewers. The only hit he allowed in that game was a 2nd-inning double by Dante Bichette. His second one-hitter was on April 10, 1997 as a member of the Florida Marlins against the Chicago Cubs. The only hit he allowed in that game was a 9th-inning infield single by Dave Hansen.
Fernández was a 3B/P for the US in the 1987 World Junior Championships. He hit .320/~.414/.480 while struggling on the mound (0-1, 6.23).
He threw a rising fastball, curve, slider, and changeup.
He is the player with the most major league victories to come out of the University of Miami's top-notch baseball program. He won Baseball America "Freshman of the Year" honors in 1989 after going 15-2 with an ERA of 2.01 and 177 strikeouts in 148 innings at Miami.
Of all the pitchers drafted in the first round of the 1990 draft, only Mike Mussina has more wins than Fernandez.
On August 12th, 1999 the 29-year old had 102 wins, more than any other active major league pitcher then under 30 years of age. This occurred despite missing nearly 40 starts in '98-'99.
