Alejo Ahumada pitched for 15 seasons in the minor leagues, winning 172 games.
Ahumada debuted with the 1966 Reynosa Broncos, going 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA and 18 walks in 25 innings. In '67, the little right-hander was 9-9 with a 3.60 ERA for the Ciudad del Carmen Camaroneros in the Mexican Southeast League, his only season outside of the Mexican League. He walked a league-record 105. Back with Reynosa in 1968, he had a 5-13, 3.46 record, leading the Mexican League in both walks (94 in 156 innings) and hit batsmen (13, tied with Ramon Arano). In 1969, the young Sinaloa native improved to 12-4, 2.07 though control remained a problem (77 walks in 126 innings). He allowed only 3 homers all year as Reynosa won it all. Had he qualified, he would have been second to Salvador Sanchez in ERA.
In 1970, Alejo was 1-1 with a 5.34 ERA in 9 games, the only time he saw such little action. Moving to the Tampico Lightermen in 1971, he rebounded to 15-12, 2.65. He was 10th in the LMB in ERA though his 10 hit batsmen were one behind leader Max Leon. He also threw a 7-inning no-hitter against the Poza Rica Oilers on June 9. During 1972, Ahumada turned in a 16-6, 2.80 record for Tampico - it was one of his best seasons control-wise as he walked 47 in 161`innings. His 13 hit batsmen tied for the league lead and he missed the top 10 in ERA by .10.
Ahumada fell to 12-11, 3.20 with two saves after joining the Mexico City Red Devils for 1973 then had a 9-10, 3.15 record in a second season for the Red Devils. He then signed up with the Saltillo Saraperos for 1974 and went 15-9 with a 3.69 ERA, walking 96 in 188 innings. He was 14-9 with a 2.83 ERA in 1976 then 18-10 with a 3.25 ERA for the 1977 Saraperos, tying for 7th in wins the latter year.
Alejo was 15-14 with 4 saves and a 3.10 ERA in 1978 then 19-10 with a 3.19 ERA in 1979. He tied Ernesto Carlos Kuk Lee and Arano for 5th in wins in '79. In 1980, his last season, he had a 12-6, 2.38 record with three saves between the Saraperos and Nuevo Laredo Owls. That winter, he led the Mexican Pacific League with a 1.42 ERA for Guasave to end his career on a high note.
Overall, Ahumada was 163-117 with 12 saves and a 3.08 ERA in 397 games (313 starts) in the Mexican League and 72-72 with a 3.00 ERA in the Mexican Pacific League. His 35 shutouts were tied for 10th in Mexican League history through 2000 and he had allowed just 88 homers in 2,194 1/3 innings. He walked 926, though. He was on the Salon de la Fama ballot for several years but did not get enough votes and was removed after 2006.
