Al Smith finished third in the American League Most Valuable Player balloting in 1955 while playing for the Cleveland Indians. He finished behind Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Al Kaline and ahead of Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. Smith and "Toothpick" Sam Jones played for the Cleveland Buckeyes, the Negro American League champions in 1945 and 1947. Both Smith and Jones made the major league 1955 All-Star Game. He hit a home run to help the Chicago White Sox clinch the 1959 pennant.
