"Hecker's 'kid', Al Mays, distinguished himself last Tuesday by disposing of the Cincinnatis by but one little hit in the game. He struck out nine." - Sporting Life, August 5, 1885 issue
Al Mays pitched six seasons in the American Association. He was the first major leaguer with the last name "Mays", to be followed by such stars as Carl Mays, Willie Mays, and Joe Mays.
His minor league career began at Oil City around 1883 and lasted through 1894. He was considered Guy Hecker's protege with Louisville.
