[edit] Biographical Information
Al Heist had a long minor-league career before reaching the big leagues in 1960 after the Chicago Cubs acquired him from the Milwaukee Braves. He split time in center field with Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn in 1961, with Heist appearing in 99 games while Ashburn appeared in 62. And, like Ashburn (New York Mets), Heist was selected in the expansion draft (by the Houston Astros) before the 1962 season.
After his playing career ended, Heist was a Houston Astros coach in 1966 and 1967 and a member of the San Diego Padres staff in 1980. In between he was a scout for the Chicago Cubs until 1974, the Padres from 1975-1979 and 1981-1984 and the San Francisco Giants beginning in 1985.
