Al Hubbard was one of the first group of Yale University attendees to break into the majors. Four of them broke into the majors in 1883, with the very first Yalie to come to the majors being Sam Childs. Sam came up in May, while Al made his debut in September.
According to The Great Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Major League Baseball, Al and Jack Jones became the first former college battery to appear together in the majors, in 1883. Hubbard had appeared as "Al West" while playing shortstop in his first major league game, but then went behind the plate to catch Jones.
