Adam Pettyjohn piched in the majors in 2001 and then came back years later in 2008.

In the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, Pettyjohn was 1-0 and allowed one run in 5 innings for Team USA, which finished 4th. He signed for a $392,500 bonus in 1998.

Pettyjohn spent less than three years in the minor leagues, posting an ERA as low as 1.97. On July 16, 2001, the 6'3" 190 pound pitcher made his ML debut at the age of 24. He wore the number 57. The 1-6 record he posted while in the Major Leagues in 2001 was unimpressive.

In 2002, Pettyjohn didn't play any professional baseball because he had to undergo a colonectomy due to ulcerative colitis. In 2003, he played in the Tigers organization, and in 2004 he played in the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics organizations. He spent all of 2005 with the Long Beach Armada of the Golden Baseball League. In 2006, he spent time with the Armada, and he also spent time in the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics farm systems. He spent the next year in the Milwaukee Brewers chain, and in 2008, he joined the Cincinnati Reds organization.

On September 8, 2008, Pettyjohn received the news that he was headed back up to the Major Leagues. He had gone 16-6 in the minors in 2007 and 15-6 in 2008.
