Aaron McNeal was the player the Houston Astros protected on their 40-man roster instead of Johan Santana following the 1999 season. McNeal was a 21-year-old first baseman who was coming off a season in which he hit .310 with 38 homers and 131 RBIs in the Class A Midwest League. He followed that with an .820 OPS in the Class AA Texas League the next season. During spring training in 2002, the Astros traded him to the San Diego Padres for shortstop Cristian Berroa. He subsequently bounced around through four additional organizations and last played in 2005 with the AA Tulsa Drillers.
