The American League East Division was created in 1969 when Major League Baseball expanded and broke the leagues into divisions. The division has had the following constructs:

1969-71: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and Washington Senators.

1972-76: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Yankees.

1977-93: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays.

1994-97: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and New York Yankees.

1998-present: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

From 1998 to 2007 the Division has finished in the same order every year, except 2004:

  1. Yankees
  2. Red Sox
  3. Blue Jays
  4. Orioles
  5. Devil Rays

In 2004 the top of the division was the same but the bottom differed:

  1. Yankees
  2. Red Sox
  3. Orioles
  4. Devil Rays
  5. Blue Jays

Since the realignment in 1994 the divison has consistently been one of the strongest in baseball. Going into the 2009 season the AL East has won 10 of the 14 AL Wild Card slots since 1995.
