First baseman A.J. Zapp was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft out of Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, where he hit .524 with 16 home runs and 50 RBIs as a senior. He bypassed an opportunity to play for the University of Notre Dame and ultimately signed with the Braves.
