A.J. Reed won the Indiana Mr. Baseball Award in 2011 as a senior at Terre Haute South Vigo High School. He was selected by the New York Mets in the 25th round of the 2011 amateur draft but did not sign, opting to attend the University of Kentucky instead. In 2014, he led all NCAA Division I players in home runs with 23 and in slugging percentage at .735; he was second in total bases (164) and third in RBIs with 73. Not content with hitting the cover off the ball, he was also outstanding on the mound. going 12-2, 2.09. His outstanding season was rewarded by winning the Golden Spikes Award as the best college player in the nation. He did win the competing Dick Howser Trophy, also meant to honor the top college player in the country.

A.J. was selected by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 2014 amateur draft. He signed quickly and was assigned to the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League to begin his professional career as a first baseman.
