[edit] Season Highlights
Early in the season, the 2012 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were shut out in five straight starts by Ervin Santana. The Elias Sports Bureau reported that this was a first in MLB annals. That streak came in the middle of a terrible start by the team's hitters, the poster boy being prize free agent signee Albert Pujols, who was hitting below the Mendoza Line with one measly homer after six weeks of action. On May 15th, hitting coach Mickey Hatcher paid the price for that dismal performance, being fired and replaced by AAA hitting coach Jim Eppard.
On September 25th, in a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners, Zack Greinke started the game by striking out 13 opponents over five innings, tying a modern record. He was then succeeded on the mound by Garrett Richards, Kevin Jepsen and Ernesto Frieri who added seven more K's over the last four innings, giving the Angels 20 on the night. That matched the record for most strikeouts by a team in a nine-inning game.
