In the Game 1 of the ALDS, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers gave up a home run to the first batter of the game, Coco Crisp, but went on to strike out 11 over 7 innings, not giving up another run to the Oakland Athletics. The Tigers got the initial run back in the bottom of the 1st, took the lead with a 3rd-inning score, and completed the tally when C Alex Avila homered off Jarrod Parker in the 5th for a 3 - 1 win.

The Tigers took a two games to none lead in the ALDS on Don Kelly's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th which scored Omar Infante to close a 5-4 win over Oakland. Detroit scored in each of the last three innings to pull out the win.

The Athletics avoided elimination with a 2-0 win over the Tigers in Game 3. Brett Anderson pitched 6 shutout innings in returning to the mound after a twenty-day injury layoff, setting the tone for Oakland. Coco Crisp scored a run in the 1st and DH Seth Smith homered off Anibal Sanchez in the 5th for the only runs of the game.

The Athletics orchestrated a three-run rally in the bottom of the 9th off Tigers closer Jose Valverde to win, 4-3, in Game 4 and even the ALDS at two wins apiece. Detroit led 3-1 entering the final frame when Seth Smith hit a two-run double to tie the score, and Coco Crisp ended the game with a single.

Ace Justin Verlander pitched what was for him a typical game, striking out 11 and throwing a shutout as Detroit eliminated Oakland with a 6-0 win in Game 5 of the ALDS. He became the second pitcher to fan 10 or more in a winner-take-all game, following Sandy Koufax in the 1965 World Series.
