[edit] Off-season
Coming off a disappointing 72-90 record in 2007, the White Sox looked to re-load and become a contender again for 2008. Pitcher Jon Garland was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Shortstop Orlando Cabrera on November 18th, 2007, and Nick Swisher was acquired from the Oakland Athletics for a package of prospects, lead by Ryan Sweeney. The biggest move, however, was the acquisition of leftfielder Carlos Quentin from the Arizona Diamondbacks for prospect Chris Carter. The team also signed Alexei Ramirez, a former Cuban national team player who had moved to the US. Alex Cintron, Darin Erstad, Scott Podsednik, Luis Terrero were among the players not retained from 2007.
[edit] Regular season
The regular season started March 31st in Cleveland for a three game series against the Indians. The White Sox started 5-2, helped out with a road sweep of the Detroit Tigers. However, the rest of the month, the White Sox were inconsistent, and finished 14-12. To start May, they played the Toronto Blue Jays in a series that was controversial for the Sox. Ozzie Guillen was heavily criticized for allegedly using "blow-up dolls." The White Sox had an 8-game winning streak from May 14 to May 22, sweeping the Giants and Indians in the process.
