The 2008 Yankees set a MLB record by winning their home opener, the 11th straight time that a Yankees team won their first game at home. This broke the record held by the 1945-1954 Pittsburgh Pirates. Chien-Ming Wang got the 3-2 win over Roy Halladay and Mariano Rivera registered a save while Melky Cabrera hit a solo homer.
