The 2007 San Diego Padres missed the 2007 Postseason by losing a one-game playoff to the Colorado Rockies after both teams had finished tied with a record of 89-73 after 162 games, thanks to the Rockies finishing the season on a 13-1 run. The playoff game was played at Coors Field on October 1 and was won by the Rockies in 13 innings. The Padres had taken an 8-6 lead in the top of the 13th on a two-run home run by Scott Hairston, only to see ace closer Trevor Hoffman blow the game by giving up two doubles, a triple, an intentional walk and a sacrifice fly by Jamey Carroll to score Matt Holliday on a close play at home, giving Colorado a 9-8 victory.
Two days earlier, Hoffman had blown another opportunity to put the Padres in the postseason, when he gave up a two-strike game-tying triple to the Milwaukee Brewers' Tony Gwynn Jr. with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning. Hoffman had become the first man to notch 500 career saves earlier in the year, and recorded 42 on the season, before failing in those two crucial opportunities.
