[edit] History, Comments, Contributions
The 2007 New York Mets, who were favored to win the division, had a notable collapse at the end of the season. In first place for 140 days, they lost 12 of their last 17 games. On the last day of the regular season, they were tied for first place with the Philadelphia Phillies, who had erased a seven-game deficit since September 12. The Mets lost 8-1 to the Florida Marlins as the Marlins had a seven-run first inning against veteran pitcher Tom Glavine. Meanwhile, the Phillies beat Washington to clinch the division title.
The 2007 Mets were the first major league team to feature six players who were at least 40 years old: Julio Franco, Jeff Conine, Moises Alou, Orlando Hernandez, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Tom Glavine (the 1947 White Sox had held the record of 5). In spite of that, neither the pitching staff nor the team as a whole was the oldest in the league.
Shea Stadium was definitely a pitcher's park in 2007, with a park factor of only 95 (100 is neutral, and over 100 favors hitters).
