The Angels won their first ever World Series after winning just 75 games the previous season. It was a remarkable change of fortune brought about Mike Scioscia, who established himself as one of baseball's best managers. Barry Bonds and the Giants could not win game seven after a disheartening collapse in game six. It was baseball's second straight seven game World Series.
The postseason made David Eckstein and Francisco Rodriguez famous, both would continue to have strong careers. The Twins made their first playoff appearance since 1991. They defeated the A's in the division series before losing to the Angels in the ALCS. The Yankees fell short of a championship for the second straight year after getting knocked out by the Angels.
The Braves, Diamondbacks, and Cardinals all made the postseason for the second consecutive year. The Braves and D'Backs fell short in the division series, and the Cardinals fell to the Giants in the NLCS.
