The Florida Marlins' 1998 season started off with the team theoretically trying to defend its title of World Series Champions, a title they won in 1997. Their manager was Jim Leyland. They played home games at Pro Player Stadium. They finished with a record of 54-108, 5th place in the NL East. The team is notable for having arguably the biggest fire sale in sports history, auctioning off nearly all of its notable players.
The players who weren't traded by opening day were dealt away early in the season. In one of those deals, the Marlins acquired all-star catcher Mike Piazza from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a May 14th trade. His tenure as a Marlin was short-lived, however, as he was sent to the New York Mets eight days later in return for a package of youngsters. All of these shenanigans left a bitter taste in fans' mouths, and the team received very little boost in popularity from its Cinderella season of the previous year.
