Game 1 was a classic 13-inning game. In the 13th inning Tony Pena, one of the worst hitters on either team, homered to left on a 3-0 pitch. Bob Costas announcing the game seemed very disinterested and had been talking about unrelated things throughout the game. Costas had apparently given up on the game ever ending when he suddenly snapped out of it and yelled "And Pena sends everyone home!". The Red Sox they had the game won in the 11th, when Tim Naehring homered off Jim Poole for a 4-3 lead, but Albert Belle replied with a homer off Rick Aguilera to lead off the bottom of the inning.
