[edit] Serie Nacional
The 32nd Serie Nacional was won by Villa Clara – the team's second title – who were managed by Pedro Jova. The club won the Finals of the playoffs 4 – 2 over the new Pinar del Río club.
Prior to the season contraction of the league occurred, reducing the number of teams from 18 to 16. Two of the provinces with multiple teams (Matanzas and Pinar del Río) had their two teams merge into a unified provincial team. The Pinar del Río teams of Vegueros and Forestales combined to for a team called Pinar del Río, while Matanzas's Henequeneros and Citricultores, merged to become Matanzas.
A major restructuring of the Serie Nacional also occurred prior to the season. Both zonas was dissolved and replaced four grupos (groups) of four teams each being formed. Due to all four merged teams location in what was the Zona Occidental, a former Zona Occidental team – Sancti Spíritus – was moved to the western grupos. Due to the new league structure only the top team from each grupo now qualified for the playoffs, with Grupo A facing Grupo B and Grupo C matching up against Grupo D in a a best-of-seven series. The season length was also increased to 65 games.
Omar Linares, now with Pinar del Río equals the single-season Serie Nacional record for batting average of .446 set five years earlier by Pedro Luis Rodríguez. Linares accomplishes the feat, and his fifth batting title, by having 82 hits in 184 at-bats. Lázaro Junco of the newly merged Matanzas club hits a Serie Nacional record 27 home runs. Enrique Díaz of Metropolitanos steals 55 bases, breaking the 25-year old record of 52 by Juan Díaz. The Metro's speedster will win nine of the next twelve stolen base titles. Villa Clara's Jorge Pérez leads the league with a 1.74 ERA (21 earned runs in 108.1 innings), while Granma|Granma's Ernesto Guevara wins 13 games to pace the league.
During the season the longest game in the Cuban baseball history took place between Matanzas and La Habana. Played on December 8 and 9, the game lasted 24 innings before it was suspended.

The Most Valuable Player (Jugadores más Valiosos) was Omar Linares a third baseman with Pinar del Río. The Most Valuable Pitcher (Lanzadores más Valiosos) was Ernesto Guevara Ramos of Granma. Vaisel Acosta of Matanzas was the Series' Rookie of the Year (Novatos del Año).
