There were two 1989 NPB All-Star Games, the first time in 27 years that there had not been three All-Star Games. It also marked the first All-Star series tie since 1959.

Game 1 took place July 25 at Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium, with an attendance of 33,705. The PL won easily as Choji Murata (game MVP), Hideyuki Awano, Kazuhiko Ushijima and Hisanobu Watanabe combined on a three-hitter and walked one. Yasuo Fujii, Fujio Tamura and Kazunori Yamamoto all homered. Takashi Nishimoto took the loss. 39-year-old Murata became the oldest pitcher to win a NPB All-Star Game.

Game 2 was held July 26 and was held in front of 21,514 fans at Fujiidera Baseball Stadium. The CL got a tie for the 1989 Games as backup LF Kenichi Yamazaki drove in two in the 8th and Toshikatsu Hikono (MVP) scored twice and homered. Hiroshi Nagatomi got the win and Tsunemi Tsuda the save while Seiichi Sato took the loss. The PL's only run was a solo shot by Greg Wells off Masumi Kuwata.
