1989 European Championship

The 1989 European Championship was played from September 1 through September 10, 1989, in three cities in France, with the finals in Paris. France became the 6th city to host the European Championship.
Spain took Bronze, going 3-2 in the first rounds and 2-1 in the Bronze Medal round over Sweden.
Sweden finished 4th.
France won four games to finish 5th; the French won as many contests in this event as they had won in the prior 35 years of European Championship play, benefiting at least in part from home field advantage.
Belgium took sixth at 4-4 despite beating France 20-6 one game. France took the other two matches from Belgium.
United Kingdom avoided last at 3-5 despite a 35-0 trouncing by the Netherlands, the worst loss of the event.
Germany placed last at 1-7.
