Team played at around .500 in the first half under John McNamara. Completely turned around in the second half with the hiring of Joe Morgan. Sparked by a game-winning HR by Kevin Romine in one of Morgan's first game the team went on to a long winning streak. The streak reached its peak in one game at Fenway Park when Todd Benzinger hit a walk-off homerun in a come from behind victory that was almost certain to be the end of the win streak. The second half of the 1988 season for the Red Sox was known to fans as "Morgan's Magic".

The team cooled off at the end of the season but still were able to win the AL East. They were then swept in the 1988 ALCS by the Oakland Athletics, memorably closed out by Dennis Eckersley striking out Wade Boggs swinging with a pitch out of the strike zone.
