Although they posted a mediocre record, in 1986 the A's formed several of the key assets that would lead them to A.L. pennants from 1988 through 1990. The team hired Tony LaRussa in mid-season, and at about the same time signed Dave Stewart, who'd been released by the Phillies earlier that year. Additionally, Jose Canseco won Rookie of the Year honors with his impressive power displays, and near the end of the season Mark McGwire came up to the A's for a few games.
