1985 Caribbean Series
From BR Bullpen
The 1985 Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe) was the fifteenth edition of the second stage of the Caribbean Series. It was held in Mazatlán, México from February 4 to February 9. The series featured four teams from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Tigres del Licey of the Dominican League won the series and were managed by Ron Clark. The Most Valuable Player was José Rijo, a pitcher with the Tigres del Licey.
Licey only hit .236 with 16 homers in 59 games in the regular Dominican League season yet set a new Series record with 12 long balls, led by three from Glenn Davis. Licey was missing Dominican League MVP Ken Howell (6-2, 16 Sv, 1.52), who had returned to the USA before the Series, but José Rijo stepped up. In game five, featuring the 3-1 Tigers and 3-1 Culiacan Tomato Growers, Rijo pitched three scoreless innings of relief to lock up a 4-2 win. He saved three games and did not allow an earned run in six innings after replacing Howell as the closer.
