The Baltimore Orioles, who narrowly missed the playoffs in 1982, were managed by first year skipper Joe Altobelli. Their offense was led by shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., the American League Most Valuable Player, and first baseman Eddie Murray, the MVP runner-up. The Baltimore pitching staff of Scott McGregor, Mike Boddicker, Mike Flanagan, and Storm Davis was quite solid and led the AL in shutouts. They won the AL East and then defeated the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS. They then went on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.
