[edit] History, Comments, Contributions
In January 1981, the Chicago White Sox were sold by Bill Veeck to a group led by Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn. The new owners wasted no time in improving the club. They signed free agent catcher Carlton Fisk and acquired Greg Luzinski from the Philadelphia Phillies. Led by Luzinski's bat and the pitching of Britt Burns, the Sox were in third place just 2 1/2 games behind the Oakland Athletics when a players strike interrupted the season. Once the strike ended, a split season format was adopted. The Sox struggled in the second half, finishing in sixth place, seven games below .500.
