[edit] History, Comments, Contributions

This was the first year of Royals baseball, but the Athletics had played their last season in Kansas City only two years before.

Like the 1967 Athletics, the Royals team was very young. Five regulars were rookies, as were three starting pitchers. One of the rookies, outfielder Lou Piniella, was named the American League Rookie of the Year. Only one regular was older than thirty, and the oldest starting pitcher was twenty-six. Only two position players were older than thirty, while three pitchers were thirty-plus.

Although the Royals' debut season was not especially successful, the infamous Joe Foy trade in December of 1969 netted future star Amos Otis.
