1952 Caribbean Series

The 1952 Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe) was the fourth edition of the first stage of the Caribbean Series. It was held in Panamá, Panamá from February 20 to February 26. The series featured four teams from Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Habana of the Cuban Winter League won the series and were managed by Miguel González. The Most Valuable Player was Tommy Fine, a pitcher with Habana. In a Series that averaged just 2.29 runs per team per game, Fine threw the only no-hitter in Series history by blanking Caracas and then threw 7 1/3 hitless in his next game, against Panama.
After a game one tie with the Senadores de San Juan, the Havana Reds won five in a row, while San Juan failed to win in their next five. Fine (2-0) allowed only 4 hits in 18 innings and got help from Bill Ayers (1-0 in two starts) and Jackie Collum (1-0). Leading the offensive charge were OF Sandy Amoros (.450, .650 SLG, 6 R, 6 RBI), OF Fernando Pedroso (.400), SS Lou Klein (.333) and 2B Spider Jorgensen (.130, but with six runs and two of the club's three homers).
The Venezuelan entry, led by Jose Casanova, featured Jose Bracho (1-0) and OF Wilmer Fields (.360, .720 SLG, 8 RBI), the top hitter in the Series. Al Kubski's Panama team was led in average by 2B Spook Jacobs (.360).
San Juan was last in average (.204) and fielding (.963); Vic Power's .217 was one of their better marks and the only homers were hit by sub-.200 batters Cot Deal and Luis Olmo. Red Adams was the only pitcher to lose two games in the Series that year.
