[edit] Biographical Information
George Burns played 16 years in the majors leagues and had an excellent year in 1926 when he led the league in batting and was MVP. In addition, his 64 doubles that year set the record for the most doubles in a season, later to be bested only by Earl Webb in 1931. Unlike Webb, who never came close to his doubles record in another season, Burns hit 51 doubles the following season.
He was called "Tioga George", which helped to distinguish him from the other George Burns, a contemporary who also played around 1800 major league games and had over 2000 hits.
Burns turned an unassisted triple play on September 14, 1923 against the Cleveland Indians. Frank Brower was the batter.
Burns later managed the Williamsport Grays (1927-1928), Springfield Ponies (1929), San Antonio Indians (1930), San Francisco Missions (1931), Seattle Indians (1932-1934) and Portland Beavers (1934).
He also served as a sheriff in later life.
