Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Post-Season Pitching Game Finder, it's an easy thing to check out - which I did, using "Game Score" to rank the starts. Here are the results...

First, the great starts in the post-season, since 1969, on 3-days rest:

Yikes! There are some "brand names" on this list - for sure! Notice Tom Glavine's two clunkers at the top of the list.

Looking at both these lists, seeing the names, considering the volume on each, it seems like you never know what you're going to get when you ask your starter to go on 3-days rest in the post-season, no matter who he is, and has done...but, then again, that's baseball in general, no?

Game score > 60 in the post-season

Posted by Andy on October 16, 2009

Cliff Lee has a game score over 60 in his first two career post-season starts. Here are the only guys to do that in the last 20 post-seasons:

                   Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+-----+-------------------------+
 Pete Schourek 2 Ind. Games
 Curt Schilling 2 Ind. Games
 Charles Nagy 2 Ind. Games
 Cliff Lee 2 Ind. Games
 Darryl Kile 2 Ind. Games
 Orlando Hernandez 2 Ind. Games
 Doug Drabek 2 Ind. Games
 Chris Carpenter 2 Ind. Games
 Steve Avery 2 Ind. Games

Ok, wait, that's not quite right. This is a Pitching Game Finder search, limited to post-season and a player's first two games, and those with game scores over 60 in both. It doesn't consider any players who might have had relief appearances. In other words, a relief appearance doesn't receive a game score and so if any players had a relief appearance in their first two post-season games, they automatically cannot make this list.

A more complete list can be found here, using a streak finder. It adds in Jon Lester, Miguel Batista, and a few others who belong in the club, but also adds some guys who do not belong. In this case, a guy like Jose Contreras doesn't belong. He makes the list because he did it in his first 2 games with the White Sox. The Streak Finder considers streaks at the start of a player's career or tenure with a new team.

Dave Stewart, who also shows up on that streak list, also doesn't count since 1990 wasn't the beginning of his post-season career. The streak finder, since I limited it to 1990-present, ignores anything that happened before 1990. Mind you, Steward DID get a game score above 60 in his first 3 post-season starts--they just came in 1988. (He managed a score above 60 in 8 out of his first 9 career post-season starts...wow!)

Starting the Celebration – Winning a Postseason Series with a K

Posted by Raphy on October 15, 2009

In the  history of Major League Baseball there have been 245 postseason series completed. 27 of those series (see here, here and here) were won by the offense, with an exciting walk-off win. The remaining 218 (see here and here) were won with the pitcher on the mound. While the pitcher who has been in the middle of the celebration the most is obvious,  the runner-ups are not:

Mariano Rivera 12
Rich Gossage 5
Randy Myers 4
Brad Lidge 4
Jason Isringhause 4
Dennis Eckersley 4

Limiting this list a little further does turn up a bit of interesting trivia. Here are the pitchers who have ended more than 1 post-season series with a strike-out:

Randy Myers 2
Brad Lidge 2
Orel Hershiser 2
Adam Wainwright 2
Jesse Orosco 2
Jonathan Broxton 2
Joe Borowski 2

Notice something a little strange about this list?  Mariano Rivera has finished off 12 post-season series, but only once with a strikeout. In fact (present and future) Hall of Fame closers Rivera, Gossage and Eckersley, who have combined to complete 21 series,  combined to end a series with a strikeout as many times as starter Orel Hershiser did it by himself.

My thanks to Sean for providing me with the list of post season games ended on a play that was not a PA.

Dodgers relievers appeared in the 4th most games this year, which is pretty odd for a playoff team. The Phillies' relievers made 67 fewer appearances than the Dodgers' and all the other playoff teams are well below the Dodgers as well. (Rockies are 12th, Cardinals are 14th, Twins are 16th, Red Sox 18th, Yankees 19th, and Angels 27th.)

When I think about how-off playoff teams are, I always look at the bullpen status. These guys get tired and can often be less effective in the playoffs than they were in the regular season.

Much has been made of Brad Lidge's poor performance (and Ryan Madson's bad stint as closer in Lidge's absence) but the Phillies ended up about average in save conversion percentage. It was the Dodgers' 26 blown saves that was 3rd most in baseball. Again notice that the 6 other playoff teams are all above average. (This isn't too surprising...if a team blows a lot of saves, it's hard to get a lot of wins and make the playoffs...therefore playoff teams should, on average, have fewer blown saves.)

I also wanted to point out something that happened in the Phillies-Rockies NLDS that shows why the National League is so much more interesting.

In the bottom of the 7th inning of Game 4 Raul Ibanez made a huge error, dropping a fly ball (lost in the lights) and allowing Seth Smith to reach second base. At the time, the Phillies were up by 1 run with one out in the inning.

Why would I label this error as huge? The Rockies ended up not scoring in the inning and the error seemed to have no effect on the game. But...it did. After Clint Barmes flied out for the second out, pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez's spot came up in the lineup. With the tying run on second base, Jim Tracy had no option but to pinch hit for Jimenez. Ryan Spilborghs made out, but nobody would argue with Tracy's decision.

Up to that point, Jimenez had pitched very well, allowing just 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings while striking out 7. The runs came on two gopher balls.

In the 8th inning, the Phillies nearly scored off the Rockies' bullpen. Perhaps if Jimenez had still been pitching, he would have breezed through another inning, saving the Rockies' relief pitchers for the 9th. Instead, they used up guys because they had to.

Weirdly, Ibanez's two-base error actually seems to have helped the Phillies win the game! Isn't it amazing how an error by one team's fielder can get the other team's pitcher out of the game? This is the beauty of the National League and makes NL games so much more interesting than AL games.

All of this is a long-winded way of saying two things:

  • In the NLCS, keep your eye on when each manager decides to lift the starting pitcher, especially if you are a relatively new fan of baseball. It's one of the most fascinating things about the National League playoffs.
  • The designated hitter concept really stinks, in my opinion. We've had some great DHs over the years, but personally I feel it's time to get rid of it. The MLB players union does not want to allow this as it would cost roster spots for players who fit only as DHs, such as David Ortiz, Hideki Matsui, Jim Thome, etc. In my opinion, the DH should be eliminated, effective in 2014. This would give teams 5 years to change their rosters, etc, to compensate for the coming change.

Feature Watch: Cups o’ Coffee

Posted by Neil Paine on October 14, 2009

Wikipedia defines a "Cup of Coffee" as,  "a short time spent by a minor league player at the major league level. The idea behind the term is that the player was only in the big leagues long enough to have a cup of coffee before being returned to the minors."

All of you have heard this term before, of course, but maybe you haven't seen the Cups of Coffee page here at Baseball-Reference. If you've ever wondered about players who played just one major-league game in their career and were never seen again at the big-league level, that page is your one-stop source -- it contains every instance in history of a player suiting up for only 1 career MLB outing. Yes, that includes Moonlight Graham, who was a real person and really did play just 1 game (0 AB) for the Giants in 1905 before becoming a doctor in Chisholm, MN.

So for more people who may be just as interesting (if not a famous) as Graham, check out the Cups of Coffee and think about some otherwise-forgotten players who never got a second chance at The Show.

Bloops: No, Anything But A ‘Productive Outs’ Chart!

Posted by Neil Paine on October 13, 2009

Over at Pinstriped Bible, Steven Goldman took issue with the TBS Productive Outs graphic that's been popping up here and there during the Division Series broadcasts, but maybe the best way to tackle the issue of productive outs is to look at the Run Frequency Matrix rather than Run Expectancy...

Papelbon’s bad day

Posted by Andy on October 13, 2009

When Jonathan Papelbon blew the game against the Angels a few days ago, he became just the second pitcher to blow a save in the post-season while recording 3 or fewer outs and allowing 6 or more baserunners:

It's interesting that the other guy to do it was also pitching for Boston. Of course, in the case of the Timlin game, the Red Sox went on to score off Mariano Rivera in the 9th and win the game. This was the first game in a streak of 4 that Boston won to come back from down 3 games to win the ALCS.

No such luck for Boston this year.

After the jump is the full list of relief appearances in the post-season with 1 IP or less and 6 baserunners or more.

Postseason Game Previews

Posted by Sean Forman on October 12, 2009

Monday, October 12, 2009 Game Previews - Baseball-Reference.com

There are a lot of balls in the air behind the scenes at Baseball-Reference.com and one of the places they tend to hit the ground is at the interface between regular and postseason stats.

I've fixed a couple of issues with the regular and postseason stats. The game previews for postseason games now combine regular and postseason stats in (what I think) is a sensible way.

The batter vs. pitcher tools now include an option for including postseason stats as well. For example, here is Cliff Lee vs. the Rockies including postseason stats or just with regular season stats. Please let me know whatever issues you find.
