We had to install a kernel update this morning which means that all of the servers went down for awhile (unfortunately B-R was down for two hours due to a messed up config file). This was the first time the servers had been rebooted in about 350 days. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
I also did some manipulation of the build script to move it to a less loaded machine which should have the affect of 1) dramatically improving the time that the site is updated 8am rather than 10:30am and 2) improving the performance of the site in the morning.
Also due to the Mark Buehrle perfect game and resulting traffic spike, I fiddled with the server configs and made some changes (mainly with keep alives, i.e. disabling them) that should speed things up substantially on the site. We'll see. This Sunday and next Friday will be the litmus tests.

Playing around with Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder, looking for a "not-so-perfect game," I set the controls for "From 1954 to 2009, requiring BR>=21 and IP=9" and this is what I got:

Congratulations to Mark Buehrle on his perfect game! It has been reported that this is Buehrle's second no hitter, however it is more than that. Buehrle is only the second pitcher since 1954 (if you have time to check prior to 1954, let me know and I'll post it, otherwise I'll try to do it later) to have 2 no-hitters in his career in which he faced the minimum 27 batters. The other is Sandy Koufax. Here are the lines from Buehle's previous no hitter and Koufax's games:

This came up in a recent discussion. Most baseball trivia buffs will know that Steve Carlton was the last guy to pitch 300 innings in a season:

He pitched 304 innings over 38 starts, or exactly 8 innings per start. Check out Carlton's complete 1980 game log right here. Lefty had only 4 starts all year where he didn't reach at least 7 IP. He also had 13 games where he pitched 9 innings, all for complete games except this September 22nd game that the Phillies won in the 10th inning. He also pitched one 10-inning complete game.
From his game logs, you can also see that he pitched quite a bit on 3 days' rest instead of 4 days' rest. The Phillies weren't quite using a full 5-man rotation yet, which is how Carlton got 38 starts instead of the typical 32 to 34 we see for a full-time ace these days.

On August 19, 1997 the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 beginning a stretch in which they went 20-17. While this may seem unremarkable, the Reds managed to record a save in every single one of those wins. It was the longest streak of wins saved by any team from 1954-2009 (and presumably ever). As a quick point of reference, the longest such streak this year was 8 games by the Royals earlier this month. Here are the longest streaks 1954-2009:

Felix Hernandez has the longest active streak with 8 starts in a row, but Adam Wainwright and youngster J. A. Happ are working on active 5-game streaks of their own.
Happ has slipped under most people's radar since he started in the bullpen, only moving to the rotation when Brett Myers was unable to pitch anymore. Also, despite his 7-0 record, the Phillies lost several of his other starts, including 1-run late-game losses to the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, and Reds.

Here is a bit of trivial trivia: With their 2-1 tonight against the Orioles, the Yankees have now won 3 consecutive games by the score of 2-1. They are the 7th team since 1954 to have such a streak. This includes the San Diego Padres of last year who actually won 4 consecutive games by that score . Here are the teams:
