OK, so just about all of these PAs have come in interleague play. That's cheating.
So let's restrict the search to 1973 to 1996, before interleague play began in 1997.

So Ken Brett is the only AL pitcher to get more than 3 PAs during the DH, non-interleague era. All of those came in 1976 with the White Sox, as Brett spent the rest of his post-1973 career in the NL, moving to the Phillies from the American League for the 1973 season.

I can understand that sometimes a starting pitcher is left in even when he's not that effective. This can happen when a bullpen is worn out or if there are more important games coming up immediately and the manager wants to keep other arms fresh.
But I wonder about the story behind some of these games.
Why was Jim Kaat allowed to stay in a July game to give up 9 earned runs? The Twins were way ahead 12-2 in the 7th inning when Kaat got hit up for 3 runs. Then they got those runs back in the 8th, going up 15-5. He had toruble closing out the 9th, giving up 4 more runs for a final score of 15-9 with Kaat as the winning pitcher. I guess that makes sense--the game was never really in doubt, and if Kaat was uninjured and was willing to stay in, why not?
I'm sure there are lots of other interesting stories here. Share any with us that you might know.

Last week Joe Girardi announced that he would be flip-flopping Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter in the Yankee lineup. The actual value of the move may be debatable, but it is interesting from a historical perspective. Since 1954 there have been only a handful of players to have started as many games from their respective line-up slots as Damon and Jeter.
Only 7 players have started more games at leadoff than Damon:

Here's a Pitching Game Streak Finder search for most consecutive appearances by a pitcher where he recorded 1 or zero outs. I expected to see some left-handed specialists here, and the first guy to come to mind was Mike Myers.

Well, well, well, looks like I know a thing or two. Myers got hammered pretty good in his streak. Of those 10 games, 7 were scoreless, but in the other 3 he allowed 4 runs while recording only 2 outs. All 10 appearances added up to just 6 outs.
I was surprised to see Candelaria on there, as he's a guy I think of as exlusively a starter. But indeed towards the end of his career, he too was being used as a left-handed relief specialist, and in fact he never started a game after 1990. He got scored in during 4 of his 10 appearances.
Royce Ring, on the other hand, had a beautiful streak last year, pitching 3 innings over 10 appearances, allowing no hits, one walk, and no runs.
Many of the other guys on this list are also left-handed relief specialists.

Lots of pitchers from long-gone eras on here. Wilbur Wood sticks out as a much more recent pitcher. In 1972, Wood started 49 games and completed 20 of them, amassing 376 IP. That's how he got 144 plate appearances. He did get 17 singles with 7 RBI and 8 runs scored.
Mike Gallego's 1995 also sticks out as the only season from the last 30 years. He got 28 singles in 120 AB, good for a .233 BA (far better than most on this list.)

These are all seasons from quite a while ago except for #9, future Hall of Famer Craig Biggio in 1997. For the most part, the rest of the seasons occurred at times when offense was down, meaning fewer baserunners, meaning fewer chances to hit into a double play.
Here are the leaders from just the last 20 seasons:

Pretty interesting, huh? Most of them are fast guys (Nixon, Henderson, Redus, etc) or guys who hit lots of fly balls and strike out a lot (Deer, Gant, Thames, etc.)

Two guys on there, Pedroia and Holliday, got on base 6 times. Keep in mind this list considers only "official" time on base, and not reaching on a fielder's choice for example.
Here are the players with the most such games in their career:

Any surprise that Barry Bonds is first by such a wide margin? Late in his career, that guy walked more than a latch-key kid.
And now, here are all the games since 1954 (yes, 1954--the PI has been updated!!) where a guy was on base at least 7 times and never scored:

Here's another fun list via Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Batting Game Finder. It's batters, since 1956, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and then got to bat again in the game still with that "pinch-hitter" status and who got at least two hits in the contest with that status - while never playing a position in the game.
O.K. that's terrible grammar. Let's use an example: Joe Batter enters the game in the top of the 7th inning as a pinch-hitter (batting for the pitcher). And, he gets a hit. Then, before three outs are registered, he gets to bat again in that inning, still as a "pinch-hitter" in the game, and then he gets another hit. Then, in the bottom of the inning, he comes out of the game as a new pitcher takes the mound for his team. So, in this game, Joe Batter got two hits as a "pinch hitter." It's cases like this that make this report.
Here's the list.

Jeff Stone 1 Ind. Games
Bill Robinson 1 Ind. Games
Jeff Reboulet 1 Ind. Games

Dave Henderson 1 Ind. Games
Ken Griffey 1 Ind. Games
Julio Franco 1 Ind. Games
Chris Bando 1 Ind. Games
Oscar Azocar 1 Ind. Games
Rick Auerbach 1 Ind. Games
Actually, you can take Jeff Reboulet off the list (above). I think that's a fluke boxscore error on him - as he stayed in the game as a D.H.
But, the others look "good" here - just doing a quick check on PA in the game.

I was just looking at a 2009 Topps Heritage Chrome Dustin Pedroia baseball card, and on the back it noted that this past season, he became the first Red Sox player to have at least 5 hits and 5 runs scored in a game. Here are the 25 guys to do it since 1956:

For such a rare feat, we see a number of statistical oddities. Last year, Texas was victimized twice. In 2005, the Yankees did it twice. In 2004, the Royals (of all teams!) did it twice!
Notice that the player's team never scored fewer than 10 runs in any of these 25 games, and only Juan Encarnacion's 1998 Tigers team lost the game. The teams averaged 16.5 runs in these games.
