As long as we won the game…

I don't know what to make of this, or if it even has any significance. Yet,  for whatever reason I find it intriguing.

Here are the players (1956-2008) who started the most wins in which they  did nothing offensively.  After seeing Greg Maddux at the top of  the list, I figured it would be a group of good starting pitchers, but it clearly is not.

The requirements are games with 0 times on base, runs scored and rbi. I have added the losses and winning percentage to the list. You can find them by using the individual player games finders. For comparative purposes, I have also added the players'  records in their other starts.

That's a pretty impressive list, with 7 Hall of Famers and a bunch of others that will get some (or have already gotten some) serious consideration. I guess the bottom line is that you're prone to grounding into a lot of double plays if you typically come up with a lot of runners on base. If that's the case, you probably have a lot of RBIs too.

The one name that sticks out like a sore thumb is Tony Pena, who as a hitter is very clearly grouped with Ted Sizemore as the worst of this bunch. I guess guys who hit a lot of ground ball outs also ground into a lot of double plays.

GIDP

I'm reading The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci now. I love reading baseball books, as you've probably guessed by now.

Very early on, there's a mention of the first time a guy ever grounded into 4 double plays in a game. Guess who?

Victories with a small number of hits

I just used a bunch of game finder searches to discover what fraction of team wins come with a small number of hits. As one might expect, the fraction is lower in years when there is more offense.

So this shows the fraction of all victories each year achieved using at most the given number of hits. The "5 hits" line includes all victories with 5 or fewer hits.

We see that low-hit victories peaked in 1968 (at least in the period 1956-2008) when offense was at a premium and Bob Gibson racked up a 1.12 ERA over 34 starts.

These graphs aren't all that surprising and are basically the opposite of offensive graphs.

We'll look at some more stuff like this in the coming days.

PI basics

By looking at Event Finder, limited to plate appearances that ended the game and put his team into the lead, we can find the one time he had a walk-off PA (and it was a groundout! Weird!)

Home Runs – One at a Time

In a recent comment - aawillsher asked the following question:

"I was recently wondering about a related question — what is the most HR’s hit by a player (season or career) who never hit more than one in a game?"

Using an obscure feature of the PI Batting Streak finder, we can attempt to answer this question.

Step 1:  On the bottom right corner select "Choose additional, advanced criteria:" and set HR>=1. This limits our pool to games in which a player has homered.

Step 2:  On the top right set HR=1.

Step 3: For a single season check the box "to start a season"

We may have to manually remove some results if a player had his first multiple home run  game late in a year.

Here are the results (1956-2008) to start a  single season:

Aaron snapped his streak with a 2 HR game on September 10th. The other players all hit 35 or more home runs without hitting 2 or more in one game.

To figure out the career leader involves a little more work. (You can't simply check off to start a career because the PI limits the search to the players first 400 games)  However, we can do the same search as before and not limit it to the beginning of a season.

This yields the following result.

Rusty Staub had the longest streak (1956-2008) of home run games with just one. However, Staub did have 12  multiple homerun games in his career.  Marquis Grissom's first 109 home runs were all hit in different games. However, after that he had 9 multiple homerun games. Similary, the streaks of Ripken and Yastrzremski were oddities in careers full of mutiple home run games. This leaves Lou Pinella as the only player (1956-2008) to have hit more than 100 career home runs, but never 2 in the same game.

3-HR games in seasons with fewest HR

I was just looking at the back of Larry Parrish's 1988 Score Rookies & Traded baseball card (for my blog featuring that set) and it mentioned that had a bunch of 3-HR games despite not having large HR totals in many years.

That got me to wondering what the lowest season total for HR was for a player with a 3-HR game occurring in that same season.

Let's start with this list, which captures all 3-HR games. Clicking through on Parrish's 4 such games shows you this:

Going back to Parrish's main page, you can learn that in 1977, he hit only 11 HR for the whole season. (Also in 1978 he had 15, in 1980 he also had 15, and in 1985 he had 17.) That figure of 11 is pretty small. I wonder if it's the lowest seasonal total ever?

Looking down the list some more, Claudell Washington did it in 1980, when he also had just 11 HR for the season.

I think we have a winner with Darnell Coles, though:

In 1987, he hit 10 homers all year. But in 1994, he hit just 4 homers all year! (He had just 143 AB.)

I wonder if there's anybody who had a season with 3 homers, having them all come in the same season. I'm not going to research the rest of this list, but you can if you like.

Ben Hayes

I just noticed an autographed baseball card from onetime Reds pitcher Ben Hayes posted at the 83F Project blog. I had never heard of Hayes before. He had one great year, one awful year, and then appeared in the majors again.

I noticed that he had a very high WHIP in 1983 but still appeared in 60 games.

So I searched for the highest WHIPs in players appearing in at least 60 games. Here are the top 10:

They are all recent, coming since 1990. That's true all the way down to #33 on the list, Hayes' 1983 season.

There are some pretty surprising numbers on here:

  • Fischer's streak comprised 71 innings over 11 starts, an average of about 6.5 innings per start. In 1962, that was nothing special. that he went 2-8 in those 11 starts is a bit surprising.
  • Jimmy Key managed only 33 IP in his 7-game streak, or less than 5 innings per start. Yet he still managed 3 wins (despite averaging fewer than the required number innings to win a game.)
  • News flash: Greg Maddux was really good. See you in Cooperstown in 5 years.
  • Brian Tollberg? Raise your hand if you would ever have guessed he'd made this list. He was a great control pitcher, averaging about 2.4 walks per 9 innings for his rather short career.
